Day-Star
School is a private bilingual school located in the eastern part
of Honduras. It is owned and operated by Mark and Betty Skallman,
North Americans, who have lived and worked in Honduras for over
20 years. Day-Star School was founded in 1988 and currently encompasses
Pre-School through 12th Grade.
The school is accredited with the Honduran Ministry
of Education, and as such, follows the Honduran curriculum for
education. All classes, except for Spanish grammar, civics, and
some social studies classes, are taught in English. Therefore,
the teaching staff includes both North American and Honduran teachers.
The student body is Honduran, whose parents live and work in the
community. There are approximately 475 students currently enrolled
in Pre-K-12.
Mark Skallman, as general manager, supervises
the hiring of teachers, building construction, scheduling, as
well as curriculum development. Betty Skallman is the school administrator
and handles the day-to-day operation of the school. She supervises
the directors(principals), teachers, and office employees, as
well as representing the school management before parents, the
public and the Ministry of Education.
The school is divided into three sections; Pre-Kindergarten
and Kindergarten, primary (1-6), and secondary (7-12). Each section
has its own Honduran director. The directors deal directly with
the teachers, the students, as well as the parents. They do the
necessary paperwork, as required by the Honduran Ministry of Education.
Classes begin the around the 22nd of August and
end the first or second week of June. The school gives two weeks
of vacation at Christmas/New Years and one week of vacation at
Easter. There are various national holidays during the course
of the school year.

We, at Day-Star School firmly
believe that young people are the key to society's future. Based
on this idea, we believe our purpose then is to develop within
our students academic excellence, spiritual assurance, dedication
to helping others and an appreciation for other cultures. We,
therefore, propose to guide them towards a sense of duty and responsibility
to themselves, their family, their community, their nation and
all humanity.
We offer an education that will motivate these young people to
become excellent scholars and compassionate human beings, eager
to become an example for the entire human race. Our philosophy
begins with four principal concepts: |
